In a birthday party of a colleague, a dentist detailman of the largest pharma company, a supervisor was present and asked us the above question. Some of those present were all ready aged Some answered:
1. To implement company orders and policies
2. To communicate company polices
3. To watch over the people under his/her supervision
The supervisor who eventually became the EVP of this multi billion company, said that 1 to 3 while partially correct fall short of the real responsibility of a worker/supervisor. For those who reply, you need a policeman, a maid, or a watcher/timekeeper. Which is not very nice for somebody who gets a lofty position and more pay.
He said that the real job of anyone is to improve himself (if an employee) or others if he is a supervisor...
